The Philadelphia Phillies are closing in on another postseason appearance, but Bryce Harper is making sure nobody inside the clubhouse treats the final stretch of the regular season as routine. Following Thursday’s 3-0 victory over the New York Mets, Philadelphia moved one step closer to securing its playoff position, and Harper made it clear that the urgency inside the clubhouse has already reached October levels.
With the victory, the Phillies improved to 85-68 and opened a five-game cushion over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Wild Card race. Only nine regular-season games remain, giving Philadelphia a relatively small window to protect its position and potentially improve its postseason seeding.
Harper, however, is not looking at those remaining games as meaningless contests before October. He believes the Phillies have already entered the most important part of their schedule and need to approach every game with the intensity of postseason baseball.
“This is postseason baseball for us right now. We’re fighting for that number one spot in the Wild Card,” Harper said following the win.
That mindset reflects the situation facing Philadelphia. While the Phillies have created some breathing room in the Wild Card standings, they still have plenty left to play for. The club is battling not only to secure a postseason berth but also to improve its position within the National League playoff picture.
Phillies Still Have Multiple Objectives
Philadelphia’s immediate objective is to make sure its playoff spot is never seriously threatened during the final week of the season. The five-game advantage over Arizona provides some margin for error, but the Phillies understand that a prolonged losing streak could quickly make the final days more uncomfortable.
The Phillies are also involved in a battle for the top Wild Card position. At 85-68, they are tied with the Chicago Cubs in the win column, but the Cubs own the season-series tiebreaker after winning six of seven meetings between the teams. That means Philadelphia would need to finish the regular season with a better record than Chicago to move ahead of the Cubs for the top Wild Card position.
The San Diego Padres are also within striking distance at 84-69, adding another layer to the race. With only nine games remaining, even one or two victories can have a meaningful effect on the final National League postseason bracket.
Philadelphia also has not completely abandoned the possibility of catching the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. Atlanta currently holds a four-game advantage, although the Braves have the season-series edge over the Phillies, winning nine of the 13 meetings between the clubs. As a result, Philadelphia would need to finish ahead of Atlanta in the final standings to claim the division.
That makes Harper’s “postseason baseball” comment especially relevant. The Phillies are not simply trying to cross the playoff qualification line. They are also attempting to maximize their position before the postseason begins.
3-0 Victory Provides Important Momentum
Thursday’s win over the Mets was particularly useful because Philadelphia managed to secure the victory without needing an offensive explosion. The Phillies have experienced an uneven September at the plate after producing one of MLB’s most productive offenses in August.
The pitching staff stepped up against New York, holding the Mets scoreless and giving the offense enough room to secure the victory. For a team trying to navigate the final games of a long regular season, those types of wins can become increasingly valuable.
Harper remains one of the central figures in Philadelphia’s postseason ambitions. His presence in the middle of the lineup gives the Phillies an experienced offensive leader who has already performed in high-pressure postseason environments. His approach also reflects the mentality the club will need as the schedule moves toward October.
Rather than focusing exclusively on clinching, Philadelphia appears determined to build momentum and improve its positioning. Every remaining game therefore carries additional importance, whether it affects the Wild Card race, the NL East standings or the team’s overall rhythm heading into October.
Phillies’ Recent Playoff History Adds Another Layer

That is where Harper’s comments become more than just a postgame statement. By calling the final stretch “postseason baseball,” the Phillies’ biggest star is effectively emphasizing the level of focus required from the entire roster.
The Phillies have already done much of the work necessary to put themselves in position for October. At 85-68, they have a Wild Card cushion, remain within range of the NL East and are competing for a better postseason position.
But the job is not finished.
With nine games left, Philadelphia must protect its advantage while continuing to build momentum. The Cubs and Padres remain relevant in the Wild Card picture, while Atlanta remains within reach in the division race.
For Harper and the Phillies, the message is straightforward: October has effectively started inside the clubhouse.
The remaining regular-season games are not simply a countdown to the playoffs. They are an opportunity to establish the form, discipline and urgency Philadelphia will need when the postseason finally arrives.
