The St. Louis Cardinals made several notable roster moves across their minor league system on Sunday, highlighted by the release of hard-throwing right-handed pitching prospect Edwin Núñez, ending his six-year tenure with the organization.
The 24-year-old pitcher, once regarded as an intriguing arm because of his upper-90s fastball, was granted his unconditional release after struggling to establish himself at the Double-A level. Núñez spent his entire professional career in the Cardinals’ farm system but was unable to earn a promotion beyond Double-A Springfield, bringing an end to a developmental journey that began when he joined the organization in 2021.
The Cardinals announced the move as part of a series of transactions involving multiple affiliates. Along with releasing Núñez, the club reinstated left-hander Jared Shuster from the Development List at Triple-A Memphis, promoted right-hander Nolan Sparks from High-A Peoria to Double-A Springfield, assigned newly acquired pitcher Trey Pooser to High-A Peoria, and advanced top pitching prospect Brandon Clarke to Palm Beach as part of his ongoing minor league rehabilitation assignment.
Núñez’s departure follows a difficult 2026 campaign in which he struggled with both command and consistency. Pitching for Double-A Springfield, he appeared in 24 games and posted a 10.17 ERA, as persistent control issues prevented him from capitalizing on his elite velocity.
Throughout his time in the Cardinals’ system, Núñez earned attention for a blazing fastball that regularly approached 100 mph, giving him some of the best raw velocity among the organization’s pitching prospects. However, despite possessing premium arm strength, he consistently battled command problems that limited his progress through the minor leagues.
Those issues became especially evident over the past two seasons. In 23 innings this year, Núñez issued 25 walks, while in 2025 he walked 53 batters over 45⅔ innings, illustrating the struggles that ultimately prevented him from taking the next step in his development.
His most successful season came in 2023, when he combined to post a 3.39 ERA across Class A and High-A, showing flashes of the potential that made him an intriguing prospect. However, he was unable to build on that performance, finishing each of the following seasons with an ERA well above 7.00 before the Cardinals elected to move on.
Among Sunday’s other transactions, the progress of Brandon Clarke generated significant excitement within the organization. Ranked as the Cardinals’ No. 7 prospect, the left-hander continues his recovery from injury and has already showcased elite velocity during his rehab appearances. Clarke reached 103.1 mph with his fastball in his second outing of the season, reinforcing why he remains one of the organization’s most promising young pitchers.
The Cardinals also continue integrating newly acquired right-hander Trey Pooser, who joined the organization as the player to be named later in the Chris Roycroft trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on July 17. Before the trade, Pooser compiled a 3.44 ERA in 16 appearances across Class A and High-A, giving St. Louis another intriguing pitching prospect to develop.
Meanwhile, Nolan Sparks’ promotion to Double-A Springfield marks another step forward in his progression through the Cardinals’ farm system, while Jared Shuster’s reinstatement adds valuable pitching depth at Triple-A.
Although Sunday’s transactions included several encouraging developments, the release of Edwin Núñez stands out as the most significant move. Once viewed as a high-upside flamethrower with the potential to climb the organization, his inability to harness his elite fastball ultimately brought an end to his time with the Cardinals, making him a free agent as he looks for a fresh opportunity elsewhere.
