With the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline fast approaching, the New York Mets are increasingly expected to become sellers, and veteran right-hander Freddy Peralta has emerged as one of the club’s most discussed trade candidates. As New York looks toward the future following a disappointing season, several players on expiring contracts are expected to be available, with Peralta drawing interest from contenders seeking rotation help.
Peralta joined the Mets with hopes of strengthening the starting rotation, but his tenure in Queens has fallen well short of expectations. The former All-Star has struggled to find consistency throughout the 2026 campaign, entering the second half with a 4.66 ERA and a career-high 1.438 WHIP. While his strikeout ability remains one of his biggest strengths, his overall performance has not matched the level the Mets anticipated when they acquired him.
Complicating matters further, Peralta is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and there has been little indication that the Mets are pursuing a contract extension. One proposed trade scenario would send Peralta to the San Diego Padres, a club expected to be active in the starting pitching market as it strengthens its roster for a playoff run. In return, the Mets would receive left-handed pitching prospect Kash Mayfield, one of the Padres’ most promising young arms.
Mayfield, selected by San Diego in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft, has quickly climbed the organization’s farm system and is currently regarded as the Padres’ No. 4 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The young left-hander has impressed scouts with his ability to miss bats and his advanced command, making him one of the organization’s most valuable long-term assets.
Pitching this season at High-A Fort Wayne, Mayfield has posted an impressive 3.07 ERA while consistently generating strikeouts against advanced competition. He has also earned recognition on the national stage by participating in the MLB Futures Game, further highlighting his growing reputation as one of baseball’s top pitching prospects.
For the Mets, acquiring a high-upside pitcher like Mayfield would fit an organizational strategy focused on strengthening the farm system while preparing for future seasons. Rather than receiving multiple lower-tier prospects, New York could target a premium talent capable of eventually becoming a fixture in the major league rotation.
Meanwhile, the Padres would add an experienced starter with postseason experience and swing-and-miss stuff to reinforce their rotation for the playoff race. Although Peralta has endured an uneven season, his ability to generate strikeouts and his track record as an All-Star make him an appealing option for a contender seeking veteran pitching depth.
While no deal appears imminent, trade speculation surrounding Peralta is expected to intensify as the deadline approaches. With New York focused on the future and San Diego looking to strengthen its roster for October, a swap involving Freddy Peralta and Kash Mayfield has emerged as one of several potential scenarios that could benefit both organizations before the trade window closes.
