The club signed veteran outfielder Greg Jones to a minor league contract, adding another versatile player to its organizational depth. While the transaction won’t generate many headlines on its own, it could provide an important clue about how the Cubs intend to navigate the trade market over the next several days.

Greg Jones Brings Experience and Versatility
Jones joins the Cubs after spending the first part of the season with the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
The 28-year-old appeared in 12 major league games for Milwaukee in 2026 but spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he turned in an impressive offensive campaign. In the minors, Jones hit .289/.423/.380 with an .803 OPS, continuing to showcase the on-base skills that have been a strength throughout his professional career.
After being designated for assignment by the Brewers on July 12, Jones elected free agency before signing with one of Milwaukee’s biggest National League Central rivals.
Beyond adding organizational depth, the Cubs also gain a player familiar with their division rival after spending time inside the Brewers organization.
Former First-Round Pick Still Offers Valuable Tools
Jones entered professional baseball with significant expectations after being selected in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft.
Although he has yet to establish himself as a consistent major league contributor, he continues to possess several tools that make him an intriguing depth option.
His biggest challenges have been offensive inconsistency, high strikeout totals, and fluctuating power production. However, he has shown encouraging signs of improvement this season by reaching base more consistently and maintaining a strong walk rate.
Jones also remains an above-average defender with outstanding speed.
He has stolen 21 bases at Triple-A this year and was once graded with elite speed, making him a valuable option as a late-game defender, pinch-runner, or utility outfielder.
Cubs Already Have a Similar Player
The signing naturally raises questions because the Cubs recently promoted Justin Dean, who fills a similar role on the major league roster.
Dean has been used primarily as a defensive replacement, pinch-runner, and utility outfielder since joining the club, giving Chicago speed and versatility off the bench.
While there’s nothing wrong with having multiple players capable of filling those responsibilities, Jones’ addition could be about more than simply increasing organizational depth.

Could Kevin Alcántara Be the Odd Man Out?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the Cubs involves the future of top outfield prospect Kevin Alcántara.
The 24-year-old has long been viewed as one of Chicago’s highest-upside young players, thanks to his combination of size, athleticism, power, and speed.
However, despite years of anticipation, Alcántara has yet to secure a permanent role in the major leagues.
