A former top official in the City of Hudson, Texas, is facing a felony charge after a grand jury returned an indictment alleging abuse of official capacity during his time in office.
Former Hudson City Manager Rodney McCarty has been formally indicted on a state jail felony charge, according to Hudson Mayor Caleb Ramsey, who confirmed the legal action in a public statement. While city officials have not disclosed the specific conduct that led to the indictment, the case stems from allegations involving McCarty’s tenure as the city’s chief administrator.
Grand Jury Returns Felony Indictment
Judicial records show that McCarty was indicted on a charge of abuse of official capacity involving an amount between $2,500 and $30,000. The formal charge was filed on July 17, 2026, following an investigation that involved multiple law enforcement agencies.
Under Texas law, abuse of official capacity generally involves a public servant intentionally misusing government property, funds, personnel, or other resources entrusted to them because of their position.
Authorities have not yet released additional details outlining the specific allegations against McCarty.
Investigation Began After City Flagged Suspected Improprieties
According to Mayor Ramsey, the investigation began after Hudson’s current administration became aware of allegations involving suspected misconduct that allegedly occurred while McCarty served as city manager.
City officials reported the concerns to the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office, which then referred the matter to the Texas Rangers for further investigation.
After completing its investigation, the Texas Rangers submitted the case to the Angelina County District Attorney’s Office, which ultimately presented the evidence to a grand jury that returned the indictment.
City Vows Full Cooperation
Ramsey emphasized that the City of Hudson has cooperated fully throughout the investigation and will continue to assist law enforcement and prosecutors as the case moves through the judicial system.
The mayor also reiterated the city’s commitment to accountability, stating that corruption and misconduct by public officials will not be tolerated.
City leaders said they remain committed to maintaining transparency and protecting public trust while allowing the legal process to unfold.
McCarty Served City for More Than Two Decades
McCarty was appointed City Manager in August 2024, although his service to the City of Hudson extended much further.
At the time of his appointment, officials noted that he had spent 22 years working for the city, holding several leadership positions throughout his career, including serving as director of public works before becoming city manager.
His lengthy tenure came to an abrupt halt when he was placed on administrative leave in December 2025, months before the criminal indictment was handed down.
Legal Process Now Moves Forward
The indictment marks the beginning of the formal criminal proceedings against McCarty, but it does not constitute a finding of guilt. He will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations in court as the case proceeds through the Texas judicial system.
With state investigators, local law enforcement, and prosecutors all involved in the case, the proceedings are expected to receive close attention as officials continue pursuing accountability for the alleged misuse of public office.
