Clemson University has scored a major recruiting win over Florida State University, landing one of the most highly regarded wide receiver prospects from the Tallahassee area and further deepening the struggles surrounding the Seminoles’ 2027 recruiting class.
Florida State entered the week hoping to build momentum on the recruiting trail after finally snapping a brief drought in commitments. However, that small positive has been overshadowed by continued setbacks as the program struggles to gain traction with elite prospects. Despite being a historic powerhouse with strong regional influence, Florida State’s current recruiting efforts have fallen short of expectations, raising concerns about its ability to consistently compete for top-tier talent in the region.
One of the biggest blows came when four-star wide receiver Jamarin Simmons announced his commitment to Clemson, choosing the Tigers over Florida State, Auburn, and Tennessee. The decision is particularly painful for the Seminoles because Simmons is a local standout who lives just minutes from campus in Tallahassee, making the loss feel like a missed opportunity to protect homegrown talent.
Florida State’s coaching staff, led by head coach Mike Norvell, had been actively pursuing Simmons for nearly two years. The Seminoles were among the earliest programs to extend an offer, and Simmons even made multiple visits to campus, including two trips during the current year. Despite that sustained interest, Florida State was ultimately unable to secure his commitment, highlighting ongoing recruiting challenges for the program.
The impact of the loss extends beyond symbolism. Simmons is not just a local recruit but one of the most productive and versatile athletes in the 2027 class. During his junior season at Godby High School, he recorded 59 receptions for 932 yards and 14 touchdowns, showcasing his ability as a dynamic receiving threat. In addition to his offensive production, he also contributed in multiple phases of the game, adding a passing touchdown, a rushing score, 25 tackles, six pass breakups, and three interceptions on defense.
One of his standout performances came in a high-scoring matchup against Florida State University School, where he delivered nine catches for 193 yards and three touchdowns. His consistent ability to produce explosive plays further solidified his status as one of Florida’s premier young talents.
Ranked as the No. 106 overall prospect nationally, the No. 18 wide receiver, and the No. 12 player in Florida according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Simmons’ commitment represents a significant recruiting victory for Clemson and a notable setback for Florida State’s 2027 class.
With Simmons now off the board, Florida State will need to redirect its attention toward remaining targets such as four-star receiver Sean Green and several three-star prospects, including Cam Wade, Arnold Mugerwa, Majay Thompson, and Antwan Lockett, as the coaching staff attempts to stabilize its recruiting momentum.
At present, Florida State’s 2027 recruiting class features seven verbal commitments and is ranked No. 39 nationally, a position that underscores the urgency for improvement if the Seminoles hope to return to their traditional recruiting dominance.
Meanwhile, the loss of a high-profile local recruit to a direct rival like Clemson only intensifies pressure on the program to reassert control over its home-state talent pipeline.
