One of baseball’s greatest pitchers of the modern era, Justin Verlander, has officially announced that he will retire from Major League Baseball at the conclusion of the 2026 season, bringing an end to a remarkable career that has spanned more than two decades and placed him among the sport’s all-time legends.
The 43-year-old right-hander, who is currently sidelined on the injured list with the Detroit Tigers, leaves behind a legacy that is expected to earn him a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame as a first-ballot selection. From his dominant fastball to his incredible longevity, Verlander has established himself as one of the most accomplished pitchers in MLB history.
Verlander’s journey began when the Tigers selected him with the second overall pick in the 2004 MLB Draft. Detroit quickly realized they had found a future ace after he dominated the minor leagues in 2005, posting a remarkable 1.29 ERA over 118 innings across 20 starts. He also received his first taste of Major League action that season, making a handful of appearances before becoming a full-time starter the following year.
His arrival in Detroit coincided with one of the franchise’s biggest turnarounds. After winning only 71 games in 2005, the Tigers improved dramatically in 2006, reaching 95 victories and advancing to the World Series. Verlander played a major role in that resurgence, leading the team’s starting rotation with a 3.63 ERA in 30 starts while earning American League Rookie of the Year honors. He also finished among the finalists in both the Cy Young Award and MVP voting.
That breakout season marked the beginning of an extraordinary run. Over his career, Verlander became one of the most dominant pitchers of his generation, winning the American League Cy Young Award three times and capturing the 2011 American League MVP Award. He also finished second in Cy Young voting three additional times and consistently remained among the league’s elite pitchers throughout multiple eras of baseball.
For many years, Verlander appeared destined to spend his entire career in Detroit. However, the Tigers traded him to the Houston Astros during the 2017 season, where he continued to thrive and played a major role in the franchise’s success. He remained with Houston through 2022, although he missed the entire 2021 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Despite the lengthy absence, Verlander returned stronger than ever, winning another Cy Young Award in 2022 before signing with the New York Mets ahead of the 2023 season. His second stint with Houston came later that year after the Astros reacquired him at the trade deadline. He continued pitching for Houston through 2024 before spending the 2025 season with the San Francisco Giants and eventually returning to Detroit for the final chapter of his career in 2026.
Unfortunately, injuries limited Verlander’s final season, as he was able to make only one appearance for the Tigers before landing on the injured list. Still, his career accomplishments remain among the most impressive in baseball history.
Verlander finishes his career ranked near the top of several major pitching categories. He sits eighth all-time in strikeouts with 3,554, ranks 37th in career wins with 266 victories, and is among the leaders in games started and innings pitched. His durability is especially remarkable in today’s era of specialized pitching roles, as no active pitcher is remotely close to matching his career workload.
His longevity is highlighted by his massive innings total, with the closest active competitor, Max Scherzer, still more than 500 innings behind him, while other elite pitchers remain far further away on the all-time list.
Advanced metrics further showcase Verlander’s greatness. He ranks 24th all-time among pitchers in career Baseball-Reference WAR (bWAR), positioned between legendary pitchers Mike Mussina and Nolan Ryan. His adjusted JAWS score ranks 18th all-time, placing him alongside some of the greatest pitchers the game has ever produced.
From Rookie of the Year honors to MVP recognition, multiple Cy Young Awards, championships, historic strikeout totals, and decades of dominance, Verlander’s career represents one of the most impressive pitching achievements in MLB history.
