The Kentucky Wildcats have added another piece to their backfield for the future, securing a commitment from junior college running back Ahmir Smith, who announced his decision to join the program on Sunday.
Smith, a 5-foot-10, 204-pound running back from Garden City Community College in Kansas, will arrive in Lexington with three seasons of eligibility remaining, giving Kentucky’s coaching staff a long-term option as it continues building depth under first-year head coach Will Stein.
The talented JUCO standout revealed his commitment through a post on social media, officially becoming one of the Wildcats’ newest additions ahead of the 2026 season.
While Smith is expected to begin his Kentucky career as a depth option, he brings versatility and proven production from the junior college ranks. During the 2025 season at Garden City, he rushed for 322 yards and five touchdowns, showcasing his ability to contribute between the tackles and in short-yardage situations.
Smith also demonstrated his value as a dual-threat weapon in the passing game. He caught 14 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns, highlighting the receiving skills that could make him an effective option in Kentucky’s evolving offensive system.
Before beginning his collegiate career, Smith starred at Calhoun County High School in South Carolina, where he developed into one of the state’s productive offensive playmakers. A three-star recruit coming out of high school, he accounted for more than 60 total touchdowns during his prep career, earning attention for his combination of speed, power, and versatility.
Smith now joins an increasingly competitive Kentucky running back room loaded with both experienced transfers and returning talent. The Wildcats have already added former Texas running back CJ Baxter and former Oklahoma standout Jovante Barnes through the transfer portal, while returning backs Jason Patterson and Martels Carter also remain in the mix.
The commitment gives Kentucky additional depth at one of the offense’s most important positions as the program prepares for a new era under Stein. Expectations are high as the Wildcats look to establish an explosive offense built around a talented collection of skill-position players.
Notre Dame transfer quarterback Kenny Minchey is expected to lead the offense into the 2026 campaign, giving Kentucky an intriguing blend of experienced transfers and young playmakers as the team looks to compete in the SEC.
The Wildcats will open their 2026 season on September 5 when they host Youngstown State, marking the beginning of the Will Stein era and providing Kentucky’s newest additions, including Smith, an opportunity to begin making their mark on the program.
