The Philadelphia Phillies have identified the outfield as their top area of concern as the MLB trade deadline approaches, with the front office expected to aggressively pursue reinforcements to strengthen a roster that has battled significant injury setbacks.
Philadelphia’s season appeared headed in the wrong direction after a disastrous 9-19 start that ultimately led to the dismissal of manager Rob Thomson. Since handing the reins to Don Mattingly, however, the club has staged an impressive turnaround. Entering play on June 14 with a 38-32 record, the Phillies have climbed back into playoff contention and currently hold the National League’s second Wild Card spot, sitting just 1.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the top Wild Card position.
With postseason aspirations once again realistic, the Phillies are determined to address weaknesses before the trade deadline in an effort to sustain their momentum. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Philadelphia’s primary focus will be finding an impact outfielder after losing one of its key offensive contributors.
The urgency stems from the devastating injury suffered by Adolis Garcia, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season after tearing a lat muscle. Garcia’s absence leaves a major hole in the lineup, particularly in right field, where he provided power, run production, and defensive stability.
“The Phillies are desperately looking to acquire an outfielder at the trade deadline with Adolis Garcia expected to miss the rest of the season with his torn lat,” Nightengale reported.
The organization has already taken an initial step by acquiring Derek Hill from the Chicago White Sox. While the move adds depth and defensive versatility, Hill is not viewed as a long-term solution or an everyday replacement for Garcia. Instead, he appears to be a temporary option while the front office continues exploring larger trade opportunities.
Compounding the problem is the loss of Johan Rojas. The young outfielder was nearing a return from an 80-game suspension and had begun increasing his baseball activities when he experienced discomfort in his elbow. Further evaluation revealed a UCL injury that required an internal brace procedure, effectively ending his 2026 season as well.
With both Garcia and Rojas sidelined for the year, the Phillies suddenly find themselves dangerously thin in the outfield. Current depth options include Steward Berroa, Otto Kemp, Felix Reyes, and Hill, while Brandon Marsh and Justin Crawford remain entrenched as everyday starters. However, relying heavily on inexperienced or reserve-level players for a playoff push is far from ideal.
As a result, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski is expected to be one of the most active executives on the trade market in the coming weeks. Although right field represents the most obvious need, the versatility of Marsh and Crawford gives Philadelphia flexibility to pursue an outfielder capable of playing any of the three positions.
Finding the right target may not be easy. Quality outfielders, particularly productive right fielders, have been in short supply across Major League Baseball this season, which could make competition fierce and acquisition costs steep. Nevertheless, with the Phillies firmly back in the playoff race and aiming to strengthen their postseason chances, adding an outfield bat appears to be their highest priority before the deadline arrives.
