Breaking News: Rangers Notes-Road Struggles Continue as Yankees Series Looms for Texas

The Texas Rangers are entering a pivotal stretch of the season with growing concerns about their performance away from home after a disappointing series in Detroit and another missed opportunity to secure a road win.

Despite a strong individual performance from starter Jack Leiter, Texas was unable to finish the job against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday night, falling 7-1 and dropping yet another road series. Leiter was dominant early, retiring the first 12 hitters he faced and tying his career high with 10 strikeouts. However, a fifth-inning home run by Spencer Torkelson shifted momentum, and Detroit pulled away late.

Manager Skip Schumaker praised Leiter’s overall stuff, noting that his velocity, movement, and changeup were among his best of the season, even if the final line didn’t reflect his effectiveness. Leiter himself echoed that sentiment, emphasizing execution over results despite the loss.

The defeat highlighted a broader issue for Texas: inconsistency on the road. The Rangers now sit at 9–10 away from home and have dropped four of their last five road games. After an early-season surge outside Texas, their away form has steadily declined, continuing a troubling long-term trend of underperformance on the road that has lingered for nearly a decade.

The timing of the slump is particularly concerning, as Texas now prepares for a high-stakes series against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. Historically, New York has been a difficult environment for the Rangers, who have struggled significantly at Yankee Stadium in recent years and have not found sustained success there since 2017.

Beyond the immediate matchup, Texas also faces a challenging schedule stretch that includes the Yankees followed by a series against the surging Chicago Cubs, raising the importance of stabilizing their form quickly to avoid slipping further in the AL West standings.

Jung continues breakout stretch

Amid the team’s road struggles, third baseman Josh Jung has remained a consistent bright spot in the lineup. Jung extended his hitting streak to 12 games during the Detroit series, continuing a strong offensive run that has carried over from April into May.

After battling injuries earlier in his career, Jung has re-established himself as a key middle-of-the-order bat for Texas. He has moved into the cleanup spot after previously hitting lower in the order, reflecting his improved production and confidence at the plate.

Manager Schumaker has credited Jung’s disciplined approach, noting his ability to use the entire field and avoid chasing results even when hits don’t immediately come. While his home run total remains modest, his 12 doubles and strong contact metrics suggest sustained offensive growth rather than reliance on power alone.

Pitching matchups set for Yankees series

Looking ahead, the Rangers will open their series against New York with ace Jacob deGrom taking the mound in Game 1, followed by Nathan Eovaldi and MacKenzie Gore in the remaining games, according to team projections.

The Yankees have not yet finalized their rotation for the series, but Texas could benefit from avoiding some of New York’s recent top starters they faced earlier in the month.

With a demanding road environment ahead and playoff positioning still tight in the American League, this upcoming stretch may prove to be a defining moment in the Rangers’ early-season trajectory.
