Big offensive nights from both Iowa and Myrtle Beach lead to two wins for the Cubs’ farm teams.
The Cubs now have two affiliates underway this season, as Myrtle Beach joins Iowa in opening action. Knoxville and South Bend are set to begin play tomorrow.
Iowa Cubs
Iowa edged the Louisville Bats (Reds), 11-10, in a high-scoring contest.
It was a rough outing for Javier Assad, who allowed three runs in the second inning, another in the third, and four more in the fourth. He finished with eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits over four innings, along with three walks, two strikeouts, and two home runs allowed, as strong winds favored hitters.
Despite Assad’s struggles, Louisville’s pitchers had an even tougher time. Iowa launched five home runs, starting with a two-run blast by center fielder Chas McCormick in the first inning.
James Triantos followed immediately with a solo shot, putting Iowa up 4-0 before Louisville batted. Triantos had a standout performance, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored.
After Louisville responded with three runs in the second, Pedro Ramirez added a solo homer to extend Iowa’s lead. He finished 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs.
Christian Bethancourt later delivered a three-run homer in the third and added another long ball in the seventh, ending the night 2-for-5 with five RBIs.
Charlie Barnes earned the win in relief, allowing one run over 3.1 innings. Gavin Hollowell secured the save, striking out five batters over 1.2 innings despite some control issues. He shut the door after Louisville cut the lead to one run in the ninth.
Ben Cowles contributed by drawing four walks and scoring once.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Myrtle Beach cruised to a 14-0 win over the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays) in a rain-shortened game that ended in the eighth inning.
Dominick Reid, the Cubs’ third-round pick in 2025, impressed in his pro debut with four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five.
Jackson Brockett followed with three solid innings to earn the win.
The Pelicans got on the board without putting a ball in play, using a hit-by-pitch and three walks to score early. They finished with 14 runs on 11 hits and an impressive 15 walks.
Cole Mathis provided a highlight with a three-run homer in the second inning. He went 2-for-3 with three walks, four RBIs, and two runs scored.
