Latest News: Flaherty, Rocker Bring Momentum into Showdown

After navigating difficult starts to the 2026 season, both the Detroit Tigers and the Texas Rangers will turn to resurgent right-handers as they continue their three-game series on Saturday afternoon in Arlington. Jack Flaherty and Kumar Rocker each enter the matchup with renewed confidence after delivering encouraging performances in their most recent outings, hoping to build momentum during the second half of the campaign.

Tigers Provide Update on Jack Flaherty Before Yankees Game

Flaherty returns to the mound after an impressive comeback from a brief stint on the injured list. The veteran right-hander, sidelined by a left peroneal strain, looked sharp in his return against the Houston Astros, firing five scoreless innings while striking out nine hitters. Although he needed 94 pitches to complete those five frames, his performance marked one of his strongest outings of the year despite Detroit eventually falling 7-5 in 10 innings.

Following the game, Flaherty admitted there was still room for improvement despite the encouraging result. He noted that while he consistently got ahead in counts, opposing hitters extended at-bats by fouling off pitches, preventing him from recording quicker outs and forcing his pitch count higher than he would have liked.

The outing represented only the second time this season that Flaherty had completed at least five innings without surrendering a run. His overall numbers remain modest at 1-8 with a 4.97 ERA, but the recent performance suggests the experienced starter could be turning a corner after an injury-interrupted campaign.

His previous meeting with Texas earlier this season was far less successful. On May 1, Flaherty lasted only 3⅔ innings after allowing four runs on five hits while issuing three walks. Across five career appearances against the Rangers, he owns a 1-1 record accompanied by a respectable 4.18 ERA.

Detroit arrives in Saturday’s contest looking to rebound after suffering a 10-4 defeat in Thursday’s series opener. The Tigers had entered the series riding high following a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees, but quickly found themselves trailing 5-0 before home runs from Colt Keith and Hao-Yu Lee sparked a comeback attempt. However, the bullpen was unable to contain Texas the rest of the way as the Rangers steadily expanded their lead.

Manager A. J. Hinch acknowledged that falling behind early made the comeback effort far more difficult, though he praised his club for battling back to create opportunities before Texas pulled away with additional insurance runs.

Meanwhile, Texas continues to gain momentum at an important point in the season. Thursday’s victory marked the Rangers’ seventh win in their last eight games and kept them tied for at least a share of first place in the American League West for the fifth consecutive day. The offense matched its highest run output of the season while producing 17 hits despite missing several key contributors.

Reserve outfielder Evan Carter helped lead the offensive explosion, finishing 2-for-2 with a home run after coming off the bench. Carter credited the club’s recent success to its collective mentality, emphasizing that every player is focused on contributing to victories rather than individual accomplishments, a mindset he believes has translated directly onto the field.

The Rangers generated their offensive surge without injured regulars Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford and Brandon Nimmo. Texas remains optimistic that Nimmo, who suffered an AC joint sprain after crashing into an outfield wall while making a catch last weekend, could return at some point during the series.

Texas will hand the ball to Rocker after adjusting its rotation, pushing Cal Quantrill back to Sunday’s finale. Rocker enters with a 2-6 record and a solid 3.83 ERA, though his season has been hindered by inconsistent command. Through 16 appearances, including 14 starts, he has issued 31 walks and entered the weekend tied for the major league lead with six wild pitches across 80 innings.

Despite those control issues, Rocker delivered perhaps his most polished outing of the season in his latest start against the Toronto Blue Jays. He tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out five hitters. Although he did not earn the decision, the performance provided another sign that the former top prospect is beginning to find consistency after months of uneven results.

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker praised Rocker’s aggressive approach, highlighting the effectiveness of his fastball command and his ability to attack both sides of the plate against right-handed and left-handed hitters. Schumaker also noted that Rocker’s slider remains a dependable strikeout weapon capable of changing any at-bat.

Rocker has experienced mixed results against Detroit in his brief major league career. He owns a 1-1 record with a 5.40 ERA over two starts against the Tigers, including a difficult outing on May 2 when he surrendered five runs on seven hits in just two innings. The Rangers will hope Saturday’s matchup resembles his most recent start rather than his earlier meeting with Detroit.

Selected third overall by Texas in the 2022 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt University, Rocker continues to work toward establishing himself as a reliable member of the Rangers’ rotation. Saturday’s showdown with Flaherty gives both pitchers another opportunity to prove that their recent strong performances are signs of lasting improvement rather than isolated outings.
