Breaking News: Dave Aranda Under Fire Over DJ Lagway Comment

The latest developments from around Southeastern Conference football featured a controversial comment from Baylor head coach Dave Aranda and encouraging recruiting news for LSU, as former Tigers star Andrew Whitworth applauded the program’s latest commitment during the lead-up to the 2026 college football season.

Big 12 Media Days began with Aranda drawing attention for comments about quarterback DJ Lagway’s time at Florida before his transfer to Baylor. While attempting to describe how the talented signal-caller has flourished in a new environment, Aranda used a metaphor that quickly raised eyebrows.

The Baylor coach compared Lagway’s experience with the Florida Gators to “wearing a straight jacket,” saying the quarterback had previously been unable to fully express himself before arriving in Waco.

Aranda explained that Lagway now appears far more confident and engaged than he was during his time in Gainesville.

“He’s very driven, and there’s a huge chip on his shoulder,” Aranda said. “I could see someone who just wanted to be free. Like he was in a straight jacket, boxed in and unable to express himself. Since coming to Baylor, he’s smiling more, interacting with teammates, organizing workouts, taking teammates out to dinner, and really embracing a leadership role.”

Although Aranda’s intention was to emphasize Lagway’s renewed confidence and growth, many observers criticized his choice of words, arguing that the comparison was insensitive because of its association with mental health. The remark quickly became one of the most talked-about moments from the opening day of Big 12 Media Days.

Lagway arrived at Baylor after an inconsistent stint at Florida, where flashes of elite talent were often interrupted by injuries, coaching changes, and offensive inconsistency. Aranda’s comments suggested he believes the quarterback is now in a system that allows him to maximize his abilities, but the phrasing overshadowed the message.

The timing is also significant for Aranda, who enters the 2026 season facing considerable pressure after several disappointing campaigns at Baylor. While the controversy is unlikely to define his season, it has added another layer of scrutiny as expectations continue to rise in Waco.

Meanwhile, LSU received positive news on the recruiting front as former Tigers All-American offensive tackle and Super Bowl champion Andrew Whitworth celebrated the commitment of four-star safety Jayden Anding, who chose LSU over SEC rival Ole Miss.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Nevada, Whitworth revealed the commitment carried special meaning because Anding is a close friend and high school teammate of Whitworth’s nephew, Hayden Clark, at Ruston High School.

Whitworth also noted that Jayden’s older brother, Aidan Anding, is already part of the LSU program, making the family’s connection to the Tigers even stronger.

The former LSU standout praised the Tigers for continuing to secure top in-state talent, saying the program’s success has long depended on keeping Louisiana’s best players at home.

Whitworth reflected on his own recruitment under legendary coach Nick Saban, recalling Saban’s philosophy that LSU could consistently compete for championships by retaining elite Louisiana prospects while selectively adding talent from outside the state.

He said that blueprint transformed LSU into a national powerhouse during his playing days and believes the same approach remains vital in today’s recruiting landscape, despite the rise of NIL opportunities and the transfer portal.

Whitworth added that recruiting momentum often creates more recruiting success, recalling how LSU’s early classes under Saban convinced highly regarded players to change commitments and join the Tigers, helping establish one of college football’s premier programs.

He believes LSU continues to benefit from that tradition and sees Anding’s decision as another important step toward strengthening the program’s future.

The commitment is also viewed as a significant victory over Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, whose aggressive recruiting efforts have increasingly challenged LSU for top prospects across Louisiana. While Kiffin has made noticeable gains on the recruiting trail in recent years, Whitworth believes LSU’s ability to protect its home-state talent remains critical if the Tigers hope to remain among the SEC’s elite.

As preseason preparations continue across the conference, Baylor’s unexpected controversy and LSU’s recruiting momentum provided two of the biggest talking points from another busy day in college football.
