The St. Louis Cardinals continued their strong midseason surge on Tuesday night, riding a dominant pitching performance from Dustin May to a convincing 7-0 shutout victory over the New York Mets at Citi Field. The win marked the Cardinals’ fifth consecutive triumph as they continue to build momentum in a tightly contested National League race.
May delivered one of his best outings in weeks, going six sharp innings while allowing just four hits and striking out six batters. He issued only one walk and showed improved command throughout the night, earning his first victory since April 21. After a frustrating stretch in which he went 0-4 across his previous seven starts, May finally rediscovered his form and gave the Cardinals the stability they needed on the mound.
The Mets struggled from the outset against May, failing to generate consistent offense and repeatedly coming up empty in key situations. New York’s lineup never found rhythm, as May worked efficiently through innings and consistently kept runners off balance.
The Cardinals gave their starter early and substantial support, breaking the game open with a four-run third inning against Mets starter Freddy Peralta. Rookie JJ Wetherholt delivered a clutch two-run single, while Jordan Walker added an RBI double to widen the gap. Lars Nootbaar contributed with a run-scoring groundout to complete the offensive surge and give St. Louis a commanding early lead.
Peralta, who entered the game looking to steady his season, was unable to contain the Cardinals’ lineup. He ultimately surrendered six runs on six hits over six innings, marking one of his most difficult outings of the year.
St. Louis continued to pile on throughout the contest. Alec Burleson provided the biggest swing of the night, launching a two-run home run in the fifth inning off a breaking ball to further extend the Cardinals’ advantage. Burleson later added another RBI double in the seventh, finishing the game as one of the standout offensive performers.
Ivan Herrera played a crucial role in the victory as well, reaching base five times and scoring three runs. He was hit by pitches in his first two plate appearances before later scoring on Walker’s double in the third inning. Herrera also singled and scored on Burleson’s home run before capping his performance with another extra-base hit in the seventh.
Defensively, the Cardinals also made several key plays to preserve the shutout. Dustin May worked out of trouble in the third inning by striking out Marcus Semien and Brett Baty with a runner at third base. In the fourth, center fielder Nathan Church made a highlight-reel defensive play, crashing into the fence to rob Semien of a potential two-run hit. Church, returning from a shoulder injury that kept him out for 15 games, also contributed three hits offensively, including a double.
The bullpen ensured there would be no late drama, with Justin Bruihl and Matt Svanson combining to close out the final three innings. Svanson ultimately sealed the win with a clean ninth inning, securing the Cardinals’ third shutout victory of the season.
For the Mets, the loss marked another setback in an uneven stretch despite recent signs of improvement. New York has now been shut out seven times this season, including twice at the hands of St. Louis, highlighting ongoing issues with offensive consistency.
As for the Cardinals, the victory reinforces their growing confidence and upward trajectory. Winners of seven of their last 10 games, St. Louis is beginning to look increasingly dangerous as they climb further into contention in the National League standings.
