Chicago Cubs extended their winning streak on Wednesday night as left-hander Matthew Boyd returned from the injured list and rejoined the rotation against the Philadelphia Phillies, helping Chicago push its momentum to eight straight victories.
Boyd, who had been sidelined for three weeks with a biceps strain, was activated just in time to contribute during a pivotal stretch of the season. Before the injury, he had made only two starts, posting a 1-1 record with 17 strikeouts over 9 1/3 innings while allowing seven runs. His return marked an important reinforcement for a Cubs pitching staff riding a surge in form.
In his comeback outing, Boyd worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out five. Though still shaking off rust, he showed enough command to keep Chicago in control early, including a strikeout of former Cubs star Kyle Schwarber. His pitch count and stamina were closely monitored as he builds back toward full strength.
The Cubs’ offense once again provided strong support, jumping out early with four runs across the first three innings. Key contributions included an RBI double from Pete Crow-Armstrong, a run-scoring single from Ian Happ, and a solo home run from Michael Busch. Seiya Suzuki later added a two-run blast in the fifth, while Crow-Armstrong delivered additional insurance late in the game.
Chicago’s bullpen closed things out efficiently, with Ben Brown throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out five to secure the win, followed by clean appearances from Corbin Martin and Hoby Milner. The result was a comfortable 7-2 victory that kept the Cubs rolling.
After the game, Boyd reflected on the team’s hot streak, emphasizing the collective effort behind it. He noted that winning runs like this come from everyone contributing, not just one player, and described the current atmosphere in the clubhouse as energetic and unified. He also credited his teammates for backing him up during his return start, stressing that success depends on the entire roster working together.
